For the first time at A&WMA’s Annual Conference & Exhibition, students will have the opportunity to step into the role of an environmental professional—and win big. The Environmental Challenge International (ECi) is a student team competition to prepare and present an optimal solution to a complex “true-to-life” environmental problem, offering more than US$15,000 in prize money, and the kind of exposure that could lead to a coveted first job in the field. The “real-life” challenge posed to students will consider current environmental issues, representative of the conference location-the Pacific Northwest, and will require a multi-disciplinary solution. The challenge seeks technical answers combined with appropriate regulatory approaches and resolution of political and community issues. The ECi will accept teams with the broadest feasible range of environmental disciplines, including engineering, planning, policy, economics, and various other sciences to compete at the Portland conference. The ECi problem will be posted January 31, allowing teams applying for the competition to study the problem background, as well as the technical, social, economic, and political aspects of the situation. Competing teams are encouraged to keep apprised of ongoing events related to the problem, adjusting their solutions appropriately. Additional considerations will be applied to the problem at the conference, requiring teams to network with A&WMA professionals for guidance.
