LEADING THE VEHICLE EVOLUTION: TOYOTA PLANS THE FUTURE OF FUELING UP

The hybrid has replaced the limousine as the vehicle of choice for the rich and famous. Leonardo DiCaprio’s got one, so does Cameron Diaz. Even David Duchovny, who played tortured conspiracy theorist Fox Moulder on the TV show “The X-Files” drives one.

But other than who drives them, what do you really know about the rise of the hybrid vehicle and its potential impact on the future of environmental progress? Get behind the wheel with the man responsible for the success of the Toyota Prius on Tuesday morning, June 24, at the opening keynote session of A&WMA’s 101st Annual Conference & Exhibition.

Bill Reinert, national manager of advanced technology for Toyota Motor Sales USA, will offer a glimpse into the factors that led to the Prius’ star-turn, and will talk about what Toyota is working on to further reduce vehicle emissions and diversify the world’s energy portfolio. Reinert and his team are currently driving several advanced hybrid electric products, direct hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles, reformed fuel approaches for hydrogen, full-featured electric vehicles, city electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid concepts, ethanol fuels, and sustainable transportation systems. They also launched the first hydrogen-powered fuel-cell vehicles in commercial operation in the United States.

Hear about the energy strategies behind each development, and how Toyota envisions its growing arsenal of alternative fuel vehicles will contribute to a cleaner world. Afterward, take a closer look at Reinert’s work in the exhibit hall, where you’ll find some of Toyota’s energy-conserving vehicles on display.

TALES FROM AN INDUSTRY TRAILBLAZER

William K. Reilly, like A&WMA itself, was green before green was cool. He led The Conservation Foundation from 1973 through 1989, served as President of the WorldWildlife Fund from 1985 to1989, and was Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under President George H.W. Bush.

With a prestigious career that helped to put many environmental concerns on the map, Reilly helped to found Aqua International Partners, a private equity fund investing in water and renewable energy businesses that is part of the international investment partnership TPG. And in his spare time, Reilly is Chairman Emeritus of the Board of theWorldWildlife Fund, Co- Chair of the National Commission on Energy Policy, Chair of the Advisory Board for the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions at Duke University, and Chair of the San Francisco Mayor's Clean Tech Advisory Council. He also serves on the Board of Directors of DuPont, ConocoPhillips, and Royal Caribbean International.
