Outreach Activities
The Scholarship Campaign–Sustaining
Our Legacy
With the costs of higher education continuing to rise, aspiring
environmental professionals are looking more and more to A&WMA
for assistance in continuing their studies and research. By providing
scholarships to promising students, A&WMA ensures that knowledgeable
professionals will be improving and protecting the world well into
our second century. Contributions to the Scholarship Fund may be
tax-deductible and in many cases, corporate matches are available.
Please help us in sustaining the legacy of the Association.
Sustaining interest in environmental careers and education is a
key part of A&WMA’s commitment to its professional members.
In 2008, outreach activities at the Annual Conference & Exhibition
are all about inspiring a new generation of environmental stewards.

$400
for Young Perspectives on Environmental Issues High School Essay
Contest
Improving the environment is often all about changing the way we
do things. Yet the most effective environmental education begins
early–before some of our worst human habits get the chance
to take hold. High schoolers will have the opportunity to share
their thoughts on the environment
through A&WMA’s Annual High School Essay Contest, open
to students in grades 9-12 nationwide.
This year's topic is: Greenhouse Gas Management Actions: What Can
Students Do?" The best paper will receive $400.00 and a first
place certificate. All other participants will receive a certificate
of participation. Other entrants
will receive a certificate of recognition. Awards will be announced
at the Student Awards Ceremony Wednesday, June 25, at 5:00 p.m.,
where Annual Conference attendees can get a dose of the younger
generation’s perspective on the environment.

Silent Auction
On
the QT
Tuesday, June 24 -Wednesday, June 25
A&WMA’s Annual Silent Auction moves
from the Grand Reception to the Exhibition Hall this year to give
conference attendees more time to consider bids on their favorite
items. Goodies up for grabs will include regional items from chapters
and sections, green donations from ecologically conscious companies,
and likely a few surprises. Also
new this year, for the item you just have to have, a “buy
it now” bidding option will be available.
Silent Auction bidding hours:
Tuesday, June 24, 10:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Wednesday, June 25, 8:30 a.m. –
6 p.m.(includes the Exhibition Hall Networking
Session at 4:30 p.m.).
All proceeds from the auction go directly to the A&WMA Scholarship
Endowment Trust Fund, which has awarded 96 scholarships totaling
$334,750, since 1983. The Silent Auction can always use more donations.
Gift certificates, art, collectibles, sports and entertainment memorabilia,
and local and regional items make great auction items.
To contribute, email Martha
Moore or call +1-503-235-9194, or Christi
Veleta at +1-904- 630-3692.
