When Mary Clare Benes went to work for the Air Pollution Control Association in 1957, the fifty year-old organization was transitioning from a focus on smoke prevention to a concentration of its efforts on the complexities of air pollution and its control. In that respect, it was on the cutting edge of a societal shift that would bring environmental concerns into the glare of public scrutiny during the next fifteen years.
APCA had eight hundred members in 1957 and fifty subscribers to the Journal. "Dues were $10," Benes said, "and we had old IBM Selectric typewriters and an old Ditto machine. It used blue ink. We had cards for membership information, and everything was hand entered." Read the full chapter.
