The J. Deane Sensenbaugh Environmental Technology Award was instituted in 1986 to recognize a company or individual outstanding achievement in the fields of air pollution control or waste management. In 2007, the award was expanded to recognize outstanding achievements in the fields including remediation, waste water treatment, or pollutant monitoring. Technical achievements worthy of consideration include, but are not limited to, new technologies, production process changes that minimize pollutant emissions or waste, specific processes which minimize or more effectively control or treat pollutants, and improved management practices which reduce environmental impacts (such as sophisticated models). The recipient shall be a company or individual whose contribution to the state of the art technology has been recognized and accepted in commercial status within the ten-year period prior to the request for nominations. Up to two nominations, for different technology areas, may be selected for an award each year.
The award was established to honor J. Deane Sensenbaugh, an environmental engineer, who was active in the Association for more than 25 years before his death in 1982. He served as Chairman of the Technical Council from 1976 to 1979 and completed a term as Association Vice President and member of the Board of Directors only few months prior to his death.
Any Association member can make nominations for this award. The company or individual's contribution to the state of the art must be recognized and accepted in commercial status within a ten-year period prior to nomination.
If any Association member wishes to nominate a company or individual but does not have enough information for completing the nomination form or for writing a "brief," it is recommended that the company or individual be contacted to obtain additional information. In this case, the company or individual may submit the brief directly to A&WMA. A company may nominate itself provided the company holds an A&WMA contributing or organizational membership or the individual has an individual membership.
Nominations will be reviewed and the J. Deane Sensenbaugh Award Committee will make selection of the award. The committee will evaluate the nominations based a numerical point scoring system of the following criteria:
| Points | Points | ||
| Overall significance of achievement | 20 | Level of significance of problem solved | 15 |
| Acceptance in the field | 10 | Relative impact/benefit to user | 10 |
| Extent of development effort | 5 | Uniqueness | 10 |
| Regulatory acceptance | 5 | Letters of recommendation | 5 |
| Contribution to state-of-the-art | 15 | Environmental impact | 5 |
The award will be presented at the Honors & Awards Ceremony during the Association's Annual Conference & Exhibition. The recipient will have a feature article in the Association's EM magazine. The article, written by the recipient, may be edited by the EM's editors and will cover two to four pages. The cover and article will be designed in a manner that will be easily reproduced for distribution. The Association will also issue a press release announcing the award.
In addition, the award recipient will receive one complimentary 10 x 10 booth space at the following year's Annual Conference & Exhibition or one complimentary full page advertisement in the EM issue of the recipient's choice. Should the award recipient be an individual, the recipient may opt to receive complimentary full registration to the next Annual Conference & Exhibition and one year of membership.
