Keynote Presentation: Port Environmental Projects and the Path to a Zero Emissions Seaport

Danny W. Wan, Executive Director, Port of Oakland

Danny W. Wan was named the Port of Oakland's Executive Director Nov. 14, 2019 by the Oakland Board of Port Commissioners. His appointment represented a natural transition from the increasing advisory and executive management roles he played over the 13 years of service he has given to the Port beginning in the 1990s as an external legal counsel to the Aviation Division. From 2005 to 2008, Mr. Wan was Deputy Port Attorney. In 2012, he became Port Attorney and advised the Port Board and staff on a broad range of issues in the conduct of the Port’s Maritime, Aviation, and Commercial Real Estate businesses. Prior to his formal appointment as Executive Director, he served as both acting and interim Executive Director. Mr. Wan has been a public servant, local community leader and policy maker with positions including: the Board of Directors for the East Bay Municipal Utilities District; Oakland City Council; the City Attorney and Risk Manager for the City of Morgan Hill;  and the Sierra Nevada Conservancy, appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown.  Mr. Wan received a Bachelor’s of Arts in Rhetoric and Masters in Education from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Juris Doctorate from the UCLA School of Law.

Port of Oakland Tour
Friday, September 30, 1:00 pm
Cost: $35
Pre-registration required by September 23.

The Port of Oakland approved its Maritime Air Quality Improvement Plan (MAQIP) in 2009. The MAQIP included goals for substantial reductions in criteria pollutants, most notably an 85% reduction goal in diesel particulate matter over 2005 levels to reduce excess cancer health risk in the nearby West Oakland community. This tour will highlight strategies that enabled the Port to surpass its emissions reductions goals in 2020, and new strategies set forth in its Maritime Air Quality 2020 & Beyond Plan – the Pathway to Zero Emissions. The tour also includes a site visit to see Class 8 battery-electric trucks, electric top-picks, and associated charging equipment.
