From the Archive—In case you missed it...here's a look back at the April 2013 issue of EM, which considered the management of byproducts and wastes based on characteristics or inherent risks associated with the materials, with a focus on waste minimization and recycling.
by Ann McIver and Edward Kropp
In this month's issue, the collective of articles present perspectives on the management of byproducts and remediation issues, focusing on innovative strategies to identify beneficial reuses for byproducts, the challenges that result from managing as wastes for disposal, and techniques for addressing environmental impacts that may be associated with historic management practices.
In the first article, Munter and Chambers present waste minimization strategies to reduce the volume of byproducts and wastes that need to be
managed.
Moving into the realm of managing materials, the next article by Jaeger describes the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) recently finalized rule for non-hazardous secondary materials. This rule defines for entities whether a secondary material is considered a fuel or a waste, a critical determination in the applicability of rules promulgated under the U.S. Clean Air Act.
Focusing on sites with environmental impacts that pose a risk to human health or the environment, Glanders, Zbieszkowski, and Sima present a basic primer on the use of institutional controls to mitigate risks.
Next, McNally, Woodward, and Ryan share information related to an educational webinar series focused on sustainable remediation, developed through a collaboration of A&WMA and the Sustainable Remediation Forum.
In our final article, Bradley puts the waste minimization issue in context with a focus on the communication of risk and toxicity, complex subjects
that must be communicated to internal and external stakeholders, including members of the public, using coal ash as the illustrative example of a communications strategy.
We hope that you find the information in these articles of value.
