2025 A&WMA Fellow Membership
The Fellow Grade of Membership was inaugurated in 1986 to recognize professional attainment and accomplishments related to the mission and objectives of A&WMA. A candidate for fellowship has a minimum of 15 years of experience in an area served by the Association and has been a member of the Association for at least 10 continuous years. Fellows are recognized for their professional accomplishments and service to the Association based on a process, product, or regulatory development; project leadership; managerial achievement; the education of specialists; peer-reviewed technical publications; patents; and research or theoretical developments.
A&WMA presents the Fellow Grade of Membership to Michele Karnes in 2025.
Ms. Karnes has spent her entire career in the hazardous waste combustion industry with projects involving a variety of processes, such as hazardous waste incineration and other thermal treatment technologies, specializing in those used for the treatment of energetic and explosive wastes.
She started her career with Franklin Engineering Group in Nashville, Tennessee and worked for RMT in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania before starting Coterie Environmental in 2008. In her technical role with Coterie, Michele performs engineering studies, assists with system troubleshooting and prove-out, and develops permit-related materials such a permit applications and facility operating and training documentation for these clients.
Ms. Karnes served as a voting member of the International Board of Directors from 2015 through 2020, was the President of the Association in 2019, and currently serves as Treasurer of the Association. Michele has a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Resources Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park, and is a registered professional engineer in the States of Pennsylvania and Missouri.
