Submit a Manuscript
The Journal of the Air & Waste Management Association (JA&WMA) uses the ScholarOne manuscript review system. All eligible manuscripts must be submitted through ScholarOne.
Papers published in JA&WMA are subject to a publishing fee: Current fees are US$69 per printed page for A&WMA members (valid ID number required) and US$99 per printed page for nonmembers. This modest charge helps to (1) defray the publication costs, and (2) provide open access for all JA&WMA papers after one year from their print publication date. A&WMA will cover the cost of up to two pages for Letters to the Editor. If you wish to join A&WMA to receive the discounted publication fees, please go to: www.awma.org/join.
Alternatively, you can choose to publish Open Access (further information below).
Author Guidelines
Thank you for choosing to submit your paper to JA&WMA. These instructions will ensure we have everything required so your paper can move through peer review, production and publication smoothly. Please take the time to read and follow them as closely as possible, as doing so will ensure your paper matches the journal’s requirements.
Taylor & Francis offer a range of editing and research communication services to assist you in preparing your manuscript for submission or maximizing the impact of your article. General guidance on every stage of the publication process is available at Taylor & Francis’ Author Services website.
Submitting Your Paper
This journal uses ScholarOne Manuscripts (previously Manuscript Central) to support peer review of manuscript submissions. For information on using ScholarOne, please read this guide for ScholarOne authors before making a submission. Complete guidelines for preparing and submitting your manuscript to JA&WMA are provided below.
Please note that JA&WMA uses CrossCheck™ software to screen papers for unoriginal material. By submitting your paper to JA&WMA, you agree to any necessary originality checks your paper may have to undergo during the peer review and production processes.
Please be advised that all papers submitted for consideration to JA&WMA are subject to a minimum of two external peer reviews and may need to go through multiple rounds of review before a determination can be made regarding suitability for publication.
Format-Free
JA&WMA utilizes format-free submission. Authors may submit their paper in any scholarly format or layout. References can be in any style or format, so long as a consistent scholarly citation format is applied.
- Manuscripts may be supplied as single or multiple files. These can be Word or PDF files. Figures and tables can be placed within the text or submitted as separate documents. Figures should be high resolution and should be either eps, fig, tif/tiff, png, or jpg/jpeg files. There are no strict formatting requirements, but all manuscripts must contain the essential elements needed to evaluate a manuscript: abstract, implications statement, author affiliation, keywords, figures, tables, funder information, disclosure statement, data availability statement, references. Further details may be requested upon acceptance.
- References can be in any style or format, so long as a consistent scholarly citation format is applied. Author name(s), journal or book title, article or chapter title, year of publication, volume and issue (where appropriate) and page numbers are essential. All bibliographic entries must contain a corresponding in-text citation. The addition of DOI (Digital Object Identifier) numbers is recommended but not essential.
- The journal reference style will be applied to the paper post-acceptance by Taylor & Francis.
- Spelling can be US or UK English so long as usage is consistent.
- Note that, regardless of the file format of the original submission, an editable version of the paper must be supplied at the revision stage.
Manuscript Types
- Technical papers describe and interpret the results of original investigations in all aspects of air pollution and waste management. They are significant in their findings and increase the body of knowledge upon which environmental decision-making and policy are based. Of particular interest are topics that are relevant to science and technology issues and problems emerging from contemporary directions in regulatory policymaking. It is preferred that the length be fewer than 11,000 words, not including references.
- Review papers synthesize existing research and define problems to be addressed by future research. Reviews should be critical in nature while noting the strengths, weaknesses, and limitations of current knowledge. It is preferred that the length be fewer than 11,000 words, not including references.
- Notebook papers offer a forum for rapid disclosure of new technical or administrative studies. Publication of a Notebook paper will not preclude later consideration of a technical paper on the subject. If the Notebook paper is a comment on a previously published paper, the Notebook paper will be published with a reply from the author(s) of the previously published paper. Notebook papers should be no more than 5,000 words, not including references.
- Data Notes are a short, peer-reviewed article type that concisely describes research data (dataset) stored in a repository, prior to submission. Data Notes do not include any interpretation or conclusion of the data (see preparing your paper). Data Notes should only describe the data. The dataset of Data Notes can be either original (not previously published) or be issued from a published research article as long as the datasets have not already been published. Data Notes should be no more than 3,000 words in length. They should be written with the following elements in the following order: title page; structured abstract (no more than 250 words); keywords; main text introduction, materials and methods, Data description, discussion; acknowledgments; declaration of interest statement; author contributions statement and ethics; data availability statement; references; appendices (as appropriate); table(s) with caption(s) (on individual pages); figures; figure captions (as a list)
- Author details. Please ensure all listed authors meet the Taylor & Francis authorship criteria. All authors of a manuscript should include their full name and affiliation on the cover page of the manuscript. One author will need to be identified as the corresponding author, with their email address normally displayed in the article PDF (depending on the journal) and the online article. Read more on authorship.
- Keywords. Please include 3-6 keywords.
- Funding details. Please supply all details required by your funding and grant-awarding bodies as follows:
For single agency grants
This work was supported by the [Funding Agency] under Grant [number xxx].
For multiple agency grants
This work was supported by the [Funding Agency #1] under Grant [number xxxx]; [Funding Agency #2] under Grant [number xxxx]; and [Funding Agency #3] under Grant [number xxxx]. - Disclosure statement. This is to acknowledge any financial or non-financial interest that has arisen from the direct applications of your research. If there are no relevant competing interests to declare please state this within the article, for example: The authors report there are no competing interests to declare. Further guidance on what is a conflict of interest and how to disclose it.
- Data availability statement. Please see below.
This journal applies the Taylor & Francis share upon reasonable request data sharing policy. Authors agree to make data and materials supporting the results or analyses presented in their paper available upon reasonable request. It is up to the author to determine whether a request is reasonable. Authors are required to cite any data sets referenced in the article and provide a Data Availability Statement. Please note that data should only be shared if it is ethically correct to do so, where this does not violate the protection of human subjects, or other valid ethical, privacy, or security concerns.
At the point of submission, you will be asked if there is a data set associated with the paper. If you reply yes, you will be required to provide the DOI, pre-registered DOI, hyperlink, or other persistent identifier associated with the data set(s). If you have selected to provide a pre-registered DOI, please be prepared to share the reviewer URL associated with your data deposit, upon request by reviewers.
Where one or multiple data sets are associated with a manuscript, these are not formally peer reviewed as a part of the journal submission process. It is the author's responsibility to ensure the soundness of data. Any errors in the data rest solely with the producers of the data set(s).
Authors are required to provide a data availability statement, detailing where data associated with a paper can be found and how it can be accessed. If data cannot be made open, authors should state why in the data availability statement. The DAS should include the hyperlink, DOI or other persistent identifier associated with the data set(s), or information on how the data can be requested from the authors. Templates are also available to support authors.
If you choose to share or make the data underlying the study open, please deposit your data in a recognized data repository prior to or at the time of submission. You will be asked to provide the DOI, pre-reserved DOI, or other persistent identifier for the data set.
Supplemental Data
All supplemental material should be identified as such and be placed after all other files. Supplemental material can consist of items intended for the reviewers’ reference only and not for the general readership, such as the required copy of your text with the changes tracked for all revised versions, extensive comments to reviewers, documents containing special formatting, and so forth. It can also be a file that is to be linked to the published manuscript and accessible by readers. In that instance it should be submitted as a single file, preferably in PDF format, and an appropriate citation for it must be included in the manuscript text. The document should appear exactly as you intend readers to see it, as it will not be edited. The file size of this supplemental material should be less than 50 MB. It will be hosted on the publisher’s website and information directing readers to the file will be printed in the manuscript at the place where it is cited in the text.
Acceptable File Types
The following file types are acceptable for your submission:
- Word Doc/docx
- XLS/XLSX
- LaTeX
- eps
- fig
- tif/tiff
- png
- jpg/jpeg
Reprints
Authors will receive a PDF copy of the published paper for limited distribution—rights and limitations will be conveyed along with PDF. Reprints of an individual article can be ordered at the time authors review page proofs. A discount is available to authors who order reprints or issues before print publication. Authors for whom we receive a valid email address will be provided an opportunity to purchase reprints of individual articles, or copies of the complete print issue. These authors will also be given complimentary access to their final article on Taylor & Francis Online.

Publication Policy
Submission of a manuscript implies that the work described has not been published (except in the form of an abstract or as part of a published lecture, review, or thesis); that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere; and that its publication has been approved by all coauthors and the responsible authorities at the institute where the work was conducted. Submission also implies that the authors have already obtained all necessary permissions for the inclusion of copyrighted materials, such as figures and tables from other publications. Previously published work will not be considered for publication. JA&WMA will, however, accept manuscripts based on presentations made at conferences sponsored by the Air & Waste Management Association, at the discretion of the Technical Editor-in-Chief.
